Lumbini was the birthplace, in 453 BC, of Prince
Siddhartha Gautama who later renounced his luxury
and royal position to become a searcher after eternal
truth and the apostle of peace, compassion, and non-violence.
Known as Lord Buddha, his worshipers are worldwide.
Lumbini, which was lost for many centuries and was
only rediscovered in the 4 century AD, is a the major
place of pilgrimage for both Buddhists and Hindus.
Lumbini has a damaged stone pillar monument to Buddha
erected in 249 BC and not far away are the ruins of
the princes former palace at Tilaurakot.
