The remote and exotic Mustang region of Nepal is
now open to a limited number of foreign visitors.
The best way to see this fascinating region is on
a camping trek from Jomsom, as the region is not well
organized for tourism. Our trek follows the ancient
salt trade route to Tibet, along the Kali Gandaki
River (known here as the Thak Khola, home of the Thakali
people) as far as Samargaon, then to the ancient monastery
of Lo Manthang near the Tibet border. We will have
the required government escort while in Mustang and
will stop at the villages, which are oases in this
desert region. If the timing is right, we may see
some of the October and November Dyokyabsi dance festivals
at Mustangs monasteries or celebrations on some
of the years full moon dates. There is a substantial
government fee for entering Mustang ask for
current prices.
