Strenuous Trekking in Nepal

Nepal offers many, many exciting, scenic, and strenuous treks as well as the opportunity to climb the world’s highest mountain peaks. One very popular trek is the famous Annapurna Circuit, leaving from Kathmandu or Pokhara by car or bus to Besisahar (760 meters), then walking up the Marshyangdi River. The trek crosses the river on a fine steel bridge at Khudi, then continues to Manang (3540 meters), nine days.

There are some fine views of Annapurna III and a roofed stupa of a type not usually seen in Nepal. Then, over the Thorung La (5416 meters) – time for a photo at the monument on the top -- to Muktinath (3800 meters)(days 10-11).

The trek continues easily downhill to Tatopani (which means hot water)(1190 meters), where you can relax in the thermal pool at the river’s edge (See easy trekking) for description of the first part of this route)(days 12-15).

From Tatopani, most trekkers go up the sometimes very steep but beautiful trail to Ghorepani (horse water), day 16, where the sunrise view of the Himalaya from Poon Hill is world-famous (3193 meters).

Onward from Kalopani to Naya Pul (1070 meters) and bus or taxi to Pokhara takes another day, for a total of 17 or 18 days.

An alternative, easier end to the trek is to continue down the Kali Gandaki to Kaniya Ghat (825 meters) and onward by bus or taxi.

The other most popular strenuous treks are in the Mount Everest region, in {{Sagarmatha National Park}}.
