Tours
to Tibet are a wonderful excursion from Kathmandu, offering
fascinating adventures and contrasts in culture and
scenery. The best option is to fly to Lhasa, at 3650
meters, spend several days there acclimatizing in that
very special religious capital, then drive back to Kathmandu
along the remarkably scenic and interesting highway,
stopping at monasteries in Gyantse and Shigatse.
In October 2004, the Chinese and Nepali governments
agreed to commence regular bus service starting in early
May 2005 between Kathmandu and Lhasa. Three classes
of service were announced, from luxury ($70 one way)
